A Cab Driver Drove Drunk and Burned Charcoal in His Cab to Commit Suicide, He’d Not Died, and Got Sued

A man, Chang from Hsinbei City felt depressed, and in May, he’d driven his own cab out, and attempted to commit suicide by burning charcoal on his car, but because the smokes were coming out from his cab, the local residents saw and notified the police, the police got him out just in time, and, although Chang’s life was spared, his body wreaked of alcohol, and as the police gave him a breathalyzer test, he had .029 mgs of alcohol in him, after the police interrogated him, they’d charged him.

The police investigated that Chang (age 50), has multiple priors in assault, drunk driving, along with others, he’d regularly drove his cab for a living, on the afternoon after he got drunk at the fisher’s wharf, he drove to the neighborhood of Chiao-Jing Park, hit his car onto the rocks, then, parked by the side of the road, the car was smoking, and the members of the public found Chang not moving inside his cab, they’d called the police immediately.

As the officers arrived on site, they’d found Chang lying on the driver side, with an iron pot, with the lit charcoal on the passenger side the police started hitting his window, and opened up the car, to get Chang out, and thankfully, he was, lucid when they pulled him out.

Chang told the police, that because he had economic difficulties, and was, deserted by his families, he couldn’t see a way out, that was why he wanted to commit suicide, and the police smelled alcohol on him, and gave him a breathalyzer test, and it read 0.29, he’d committed an offense of public endangerment, after the interrogations, the police sent him to the Keelung’s D.A.’s office.

In June, the Keelung District Courts gave him a four-months jail sentence on the first trial, which he can pay a $120,000N.T. fine for, Chang had appealed, but didn’t specify the reasons, and used his words to fight for the appeals, the courts tossed back his appeal.

So, we have a man who felt stuck, who’d done something awful, attempted to kill himself, and putting all around him in danger, and now, he’s charged with public endangerment, and there’s no way for him, to get out of his punishment.
