Dad’s a Pokémon Trainer, on Parent-Child Interactions

Translated…

Dad is, normally quiet, not a man of many words, living under the same room with him, but, there would be, less than twenty sentences that exchanged between us daily, and, if I’d needed some help on things, I’d normally not troubled my father. My mother who’s strong on emotions called me “estranged”, and said that I wasn’t like a daughter at all, that I should, play coy more with dad; it’s just, that I’m already, too old, and, it’d felt, embarrassing, playing coy, to my silent dad. It’s not that we’d related to one another awfully, perhaps, we’re called, “blood-related” people.

But, my dad and I have more things to talk about these past few days.

from online…

“Hey, look, this Pokémon I caught today looks so weird.” “Child, can you get to that supply point at the street entrance from your room?” “Haha, I’d caught, another Snorlax!”

Yes, dad and I both became “Pokémon trainers” in the heat of this new game.

As the cartoon “Pokémon” played on T.V., I was still in the elementary years, back then after my father got off work, he’s the kind of father who, after reviewing over my homework, would start playing the video games; and, I’d tuned in to the Pokémon cartoons on time every single day, knew all kinds of Pokémons, imagined I’m the main character, who’d gone on the adventures with the monsters, and in reality, I’d “tamed” a ton of plastic Pokémons thanks to my parents. I’d even owned a Pikachu doll that would say, “Pika, Pika” as I’d placed it in my palms, that, was from my father’s trip to Japan, a gift for me; later on, I’d slowly, lost the ability of little girls to play coy, and forgot how much I loved Pokémon as a child, and dad too, because of the busyness at work, forgot to play the video games.

not my photo still…

After over a decade’s time, thanks to the game of “Pokémon Go”, my dad got his video game playing self back, and, combined with the exercise fanatic that he is, he’d ride out at night, searching for the Pokémons, hatching the eggs. Regularly, we’d worked hard ourselves, then on the weekends, we’d shared our findings with one another, but, on the many mornings of the weekends, my father had the Pokémon radar on his computer on, and every time he’d discovered a rare species, it didn’t matter if I were fast asleep or hung over, he’d pulled me along to find it. He’s not only the “Pokémon Guide”, he’d also shared with me his specialty locations too, and as we passed the dojos, he’d asked, “Do you want me to fight in it, to get you more coins?”, this made me feel, like I was his cherished little girl again.

I couldn’t recall the last time that the fun the two of us had together, and, if the same question surfaced, I’ll know how to answer it now.

So, through playing Pokémon Go together, you were able to find that close connection with your father back again, and, that, would be an unexpected gain from the games, wouldn’t it???
