The kindness of the police officers here, from the Front Page Sections, translated…
The twenty-six year-old Vietnamese worker, Yong, because of his use of illegal substances, he’d become a runaway worker, due to an arrest warrant on him, on the eve of the typhoon attacking, Yong wreaked of a rancid smell on his body, squatted down by the side of the road, crying, a patrol officer saw him and showed his care and concerns toward Yong, and accidentally found out, that he had an active arrest warrant, that he was having withdrawal symptoms from his drug abuse, convulsing, the officer paid for his $3,000N.T. of medical treatment charges, and, after interrogations, sent him to the Taoyuan District Attorney’s Office.
After Yong came to Taiwan from Vietnam, he’d originally worked in the Taoyuan area, but he’d gotten into drug use, used heroin, was arrested by the police, and had a court date set; but, Yong didn’t show up in court as he should have, instead, he’d become, a runaway foreign worker, and later, the courts sent out an arrest warrant on him.
Yong escaped from Taoyuan to Hsinchu, on the evening of the fourteenth, the patrol officers of the city of Hsinchu was out, patrolling the streets, they’d found Yong, squatted on the side of Zhonghua Road and crying. As the officers went up to him to show care and concern, they’d found that Yong didn’t have a shirt on, and his body wreaked, and, as the officers crosschecked his status, accidentally found, that he was not just a runaway migrant worker, he’d also had an active arrest warrant on him for illegal substances.
Yong told the officer, that he’d become a run away, because he’d gotten into drug abuse, that on the days of the typhoon hitting, and it was the Mid-Autumn festival, without a home, in the compounding pressures from the holidays, and being attacked by the harsh strong winds, he’d become too distraught, and started crying by the side of the road.
As the police took Yong to the local holding cells, Yong was having symptoms of withdrawal, started twitching and convulsing, the officers immediately took him to the hospital, and the hospitals treated him immediately; but, the three thousand dollars’ worth of treatment fees, Yong couldn’t pay, and so, the officers who took him to the hospital paid for his medical needs, then, lifted him to the Taoyuan’s District Attorney’s Office to be processed.
So, the officers lent this runaway migrant worker a helping hand, and got him the treatment he’d needed, and hopefully, this experience will help this migrant worker realize that he was on the wrong path, and after he’d paid his dues to society, he will be able to, turn over a new leaf, and start his brand new life…
