On teenage suicide, from the Front Page Sections, translated…
Yesterday was the brand new start of a new school year, but, the twelve-year-old, first-year middle school student, Chung had, at around seven in the morning, climbed up to the roof of his twelve-story building, took the leap, and killed himself; Chung’s father was distraught, he’d started, leaning onto the officer’s shoulder at the subprecinct, Chung’s sixth-grade younger sister had, followed her older brother up to the rooftop, and watched him jump.
see how lonely this is? that may only be one of the contributing factors…
The psychiatrist, Tsai-Tsong Yang said, that teenagers are emotionally sensitive, he’d suggested, to all families with teens, to establish an open discussion atmosphere inside the families; and that there are, traces of the teenagers’ emotional ups and downs in signs, the depressed moods, becoming silent and not talking at all, even to the biological symptoms of insomnia, headaches, difficulties breathing, even diarrhea, all of these, are possible signs of distress.
Based off of understanding, the teenager, Chung was brought up in a single-parent home, Chung’s father suffered work injuries, couldn’t work a regular job, and the family is listed as a low-income household that lives off of government assistance, the family collected $19,000N.T. a month given by the government, of which, $12,000N.T. goes into the rent of their residence.
imagine you’re this person, standing at the edge…
The police investigated, that Chung’s father stated, that two nights ago, eh took his children out to supper, and in the meals, they’d laughed and chatted on; and early morning at around six when he woke his son up, his son told him, “I’m going to go do something.”, he’d not thought too much about it, and not long thereafter, he’d heard a loud “BANG!”, followed by his daughter’s panic, running homem to tell him, “Older brother fell off”, and that, was when he was shocked, to discover, “How can this have happened!”
The representative of the community who bore witness to the whole thing, Wang said, early in the morning, she’d gone up to the rooftop to water the plants, saw Chung, the adolescent male sat, danging his legs out over the rooftop, with the younger sister in tears, telling him, “Don’t do this, brother!”, she’d gone up to talk to him, “It’s dangerous, come back down!”, and that, was when the adolescent male took the leap, he ended up, by the pavements, she’d caclled the police immediately.
Chung’s father told, that his son performed okay in school, that the household economic wasn’t well at all, and that he was discriminated against in school by the rest of his classmates, and that that, might have been what’s causing him the upset.
As the D.A. inquired, they’d asked the father if he’d detected any signs of abnormal behaviors from his own son, the father stated, that there was nothing wrong or appeared off about his son during the summers, he’d ridden his bicycle, to his elementary school, to have conversations with his former instructors.
The D.A. asked Chung’s younger sister, she’d told him, that in the morning, her older brother went up to the rooftop first, came back down, told her, “I need to go do something, help me carry my things”, she’d followed her brother up, and saw him climbing over the connecting walls, she’d hollered out to him, “What are you doing, don’t do something stupid, why are you doing this?”, the older brother replied, “I want to die!”
And the younger sister asked him in a hurry, “is it because of school? Is it being in a new environment that’s caused you too much stress”, the older brother repliled, “that’s one of the reasons”, then, he, leapt to his death.
So, from what is gathered here, school may just be the final straw, and maybe, it’s being brought up in a poverty stricken environment, or that this young man got taunted and discriminated by his classmates at school, we really have no idea of knowing, that’s crushed him, that’s caused him, to kill himself.
