The Boundaries of the Body

What’s acceptable in the realms of touching someone in school, lessons for a young child, translated…

There was a very cute little girl in my son’s kindergarten class, with bangs and the princess hairdo, she’d worn an assortment of princess-style dresses to school, she looked like a real-life doll; every time she saw me, she’d always looked real shy, and said hi to me in her childish voice, and so I’d imagined her to be a very gentle and mild, easy going little girl.

Until once, as I was picking my son up from school, I saw another little boy, holding on to his knees, looking like he was in excruciating pain, and this beautiful little princess said in her childish voice, very seriously, reported to the teacher, “Teacher, he hugged me.”  Turns out, that this little boy saw how cute she was, and hugged her, and the little rabbit became a little tiger immediately, and kicked him hard, made him fall to the ground.

The teacher naturally, told the little rabbit princess to report it to the teachers first, to not resolve things with violence, but, I believe, that this could be, a great opportunity to teach the children.  The young girls can learn how to protect themselves when they feel that they were being violated, and boys can also learn, that just because you saw something you liked, doesn’t mean that you can touch someone else’s body.

This sort of respect of oneself, as well as others’ bodies, is a very important lesson in this society where, “So long as I like it, why not”.

So, of course this mother is NOT condoning that violence should be used to solve problems, but, that little boy who hugged that pretty looking little girl would learn HIS lessons well, after getting HIS ass kicked by her, after all, you should touch anything that’s eye catching, that does NOT belong to you, and, when they’re that young, boundaries should BE set, otherwise, when children grow up, they won’t KNOW how to respect other people’s boundaries, so, I do believe, that this little girl taught the little boy HIS lesson, and of course, I’m still NOT saying that you should resort to PHYSICAL violence to solve things either!
