The dedication of a mother toward her own handicapped son, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

The single-mother, Yen looked after her own severely handicapped son for over twenty years, her son had graduated from technical high school, and, life finally took a turn, for the better, but, she’d found that she has cancer, and was, weakened by the day, and all she could do was, sent her own son into a care facility. And now, every single week, she’d taken her son on bus rides to places, and cherished the moments they could spend together.

Yen is sixty-two years-old currently, she has two sons, her older son, at age one, was diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder, with multiple disabilities, her husband died early, she’d shouldered the burdens all on her own, she’d become, overworked between the workforce and her home front.

In order to make sure that her sons can take care of themselves, she’d accompanied her sons through the regular classes in the elementary years, and took her sons into the middle and high school branches of handicapped schools, and helped her son through occupational trainings. And now, her first born son is able to, communicate, using simple words, and can carry on in conversations with others now.

In order to focus on taking care of her own sons, Wu retired from her post office position twelve years ago, thought that her life was going to be looking up, but, two years ago, she was, diagnosed with third stage of lymphoma.

After she was told of the diagnosis, Yen said, the first thought that was in her mind was not worrying about herself, instead, “What’s going to happen to my sons?”, her close friends and relatives consoled her, to take her sons into the care facilities, she’d originally not wanted to, but, she’d become weakened by the day, and she’d had to, send her sons, into the care facilities.

And, although the care facility provided the all-day care, but Yen would take her son home every week; knowing that he loved riding the busses, she’d picked him up, and took him on rides across the city of Kaohsiung, and, sitting in the corner of the bus, she and her son started laughing and chatting, it was, the best time of their lives that they’d come to share.

Yen said, that like a lot of the parents with handicapped children, the only thing she’s worried about are her children. She’d already, set up a trust for her sons, in case one day, she were to pass on, her sons can have what he’d needed to live off, “now, I just want to spend more time with my sons.”

So, this mother, although she’s diagnosed with cancer, she’d still, worked hard, to make memories with her own son, and, imagine the dedications, the loves that it’d taken her, to raise her two handicapped sons and now, they both have skills that they will be able to depend on, even after she’s gone, and she’d set up a trust fund for them, so they would be taken care of, after she passes away, and that, would be, the amazing strengths of a mother.
