The tragic end, of this mother and son pair, from the Front Page Sections, translated…
“Such a pair with all the hardships in their lives!” the woman, Chen from Taichung lives alone with her mentally ill son, she’d died of illness right before the Chinese New Year’s, the youngest son couldn’t accept it as a fact, and, drank every single day, to miss his own mother, imagined, that his mother is, still, at home, sleeping in her bedroom there with him, the super cold fronts attacked before the New Year’s, had caused the youngest son to die at home also, the charitable group that was able to get coffins donated for this mother and son pair buried them together, and felt the sorrows and hardships of the poverty stricken families.
The Social Services Department’s Mental Health Agency of the city of Taichung said, that the mentally ill are registered with the department of sanitations, and they’d sent people over, to visit with, to offer counseling to the families, and if the localities had found families to be in economic difficulties, they could easily file of assistance on behalf of the families.
The woman, Chen, living in Taiping District was left with the care of two mentally ill sons, the eldest would become violent, and was, forced into hospitalization, the younger son worked odds and ends, with an unstable source of income, the mother and son relied on low income assistance to live off of.
The seventy-seven year-old Chen is immobilized, couldn’t take care of her own living from day to day, needed her forty-nine-year-old youngest son to take care of her, but the youngest son is diagnosed with depression, and would barely be able to care for his mother, the two of them were, extremely connected, and the neighbors would often visit them with food items.
The founder of the coffin donor organization, Lai stated, that Chen had a stroke and her hypertension was also acting up, and she’d died on her way to the hospitals, and the organization got a call from the volunteers, after they’d made a house visit to Chen’s residence, they’d donated $70,000N.T. from others who’d donated to the organization, to help with Chen’s funeral, and after she was cremated, her ashes were placed inside a tower.
A month later, the group who’d donated the coffins got another call, that due to the cold fronts that attacked, there was a family in Taiping District that needed help on settling of the final affairs again, Lai and members of the group arrived, and, when they saw that same old rundown house, they were both shocked, “Didn’t we just drop by here before?”
Lai asked the man in charge of the borough, and confirmed that the last time, it was, the mother who’d died at home, and this time, it was, the younger son. As he was found, fallen on the floor, there were, bottles lying all around, the coroner examined the body, and concluded, that his death was brought on, “long-term overconsumption of alcohol”.
The neighbors told, that after Chen died, her youngest had a hard time coming to terms with his mother’s death, and couldn’t get himself out of depression, and used alcohol to numb out the pains, and imagined, that his mother were still alive, told the neighbors, “My mother’s sleeping, I need to go out to work, do keep an eye on mom for me,”, the neighbors all felt bad, and just, complied and played along.
After the not-for-profit organization that donated the coffin for his burial and had, cremated the son, they’d placed his ashes in the same area where they’d placed his mother too, so they can be together forever.
So, this, is the kindness from the world, and from this, you see, the trials of life working too, and, because the son missed the mother too much, he’d tried to drown out that strong sense of loss he felt from his mother’s death with alcohol, and, ended up, poisoning himself to death, and thankfully, there are organizations such as the ones mentioned, that are kind enough, to help out with these people who are live in poverty, handle their final affairs.
