The Woman in the Supermarket

Encounters from daily life, translated…

At around 3:30 in the afternoon, before the cash registers at the supermarket, there was, a middle aged woman, dressed in raggedly clothes standing, hesitating.

She had a basket-full of groceries, but acted hesitant around the checkout counters, and the cashier who’d waited on her for a while became confused also.  I saw her looking around, turned her head, to look back at me, then finally, she’d, slowly, placed the items on the surveyor belt from the shopping basket, to the cashier to check out.

not my photograph…

As the cashier told her the amount, she’d handed him a bag full of vegetables, told him she’d wanted a refund on them, as the cashier deducted the items, the woman hesitated a bit, then, took out a few more fruits and vegetables to return.  Going back and forth, as the cashier told the new amount of her groceries to her, she’d patted that old coin purse, turned around to look at me, seemed to want to say something, but didn’t, then, counted out the coins, and placed them into the cashier’s hand.

The young cashier was more than patient, didn’t hurry the woman up, I’d stood in line quietly as well.  Gladly, there were just, the two of us, waiting to check out, otherwise, it would surely, get the crowd all roused up I suppose…

Finally my turn, as the cashier bagged up my groceries, I’d lifted my head, and found the woman standing not far off, looking at my face, then, at my wallet, and after quite awhile, she’d taken the fruits and vegetables she’d paid for, out of the items she’d returned for a refund and left.

I’d thought about the woman’s hesitance, and felt touched.  I believe, that that woman may be in a sort of a jam, not having enough money, and without anybody to offer her the assistance.  I’d looked back at my own worry free life, I really need to, cherish what I have here!

not my photo still…

And so, this, is from someone’s observation, and, she’d not thought about helping the woman who was standing before her at the checkout counters out, because maybe, it didn’t cross her mind to, or that she didn’t want to make the woman feel bad, who knows???  But, the woman who’d gone into the grocery stores to return the items could have been assisted by someone…
