Last year, a new worker came to the office, Ms. S. And, because we’re all hired based off of our skills, we’re responsible for different things, and, there’s not that many conflicts of interest for us all, and, we all got along, quite well with each other, and everybody is looking forward to working with this new member of the team; but slowly, everybody began to discover, that there may be something lacking, in Ms. S’s work abilities.
First, a coworker who works in the copy room had a problem with her, Ms. S needed a two-sided copy, and she didn’t know how to set up this function, the team member responsible for the copy room taught her once, but, very shortly thereafter, Ms. S had the same troubles again. And so, my colleague printed out a manual and mailed it to her. She’d originally thought, that the problems had been solved, but Ms. S still went to him, asking questions regarding how to use the copy machine a lot. My coworker asked her, “Did I not send you the how-to guide in the mail already by e-mail?”, she’d replied, “But, I seemed to have, misplaced the e-mail.”
There , are only FIVE functions that Ms. S needed to perform on her job, but, when someone requested her to do one, she’d said, in a timid voice, she’d never done it before, and didn’t know how to, then, she’d not needed to complete the tasks; plus, she’d not even have enough of the most basic of all computer skills, she’d needed someone to help her save a file onto the computers, let alone, making a spreadsheet using Excel. And slowly, the FIVE tasks she was asked to perform were, spread out, and now, she’s only in charge of just TWO functions. The rest of her workload, our boss gave the coworkers bonuses, to complete.
With the accumulations of messing things up by Ms. S, and the boss didn’t seem to plan to fire her either, everybody is getting angry in private. One day, we’re all, discussing Ms. S’s inabilities to handle things, the one with the longest work experiences at the office, Wang stayed the same, someone finally asked her, “Don’t you think it’s very unfair?”
Wang replied, in a flattened tone, “Everybody knows about lotto, right, and, the person you hated the most in the world, or that bad neighbor may, win it overnight, and start living better off than you, although you felt angered over this, there’s still, NOTHING you can do about it, there’s NO fairness in the lottery, it’s solely, luck. And, Ms. S seemed to have won the lotto at work, at the moment we’re in desperate need of someone, she’d come, and, luckily, she had our boss too; you know how the boss is, he’s just a gentle elderly person, he sees the best in everybody, instead of the flaws, and, perhaps, that, is where Ms. S is lucky.”
Wang’s theory, sounded, somewhat, reasonable, and, seeing how things are NOT within our controls, why not just change our minds, and wave the dark clouds off, and allow more sun, to shine on us at work!
There would be those, who are luckier at work than most, and, it would seem that no matter how much the person messes up, the boss is still more than tolerant, and, just like the case from above, you can get mad about how unfair it is, keep torturing yourselves, over how come she’s so much luckier, and had it be me who messed up, I would’ve gotten fired already, blah, blah, blah, or, you can just, focus on your own work and do the best you can do on that, it’ll be a whole lot easier on you that way…
