This still happened, in a CROWDED place, talk about the worst case of bystander effect and the diffusion of responsibility here!  From the Newspapers, translated…

An unemployed man, Lai, two late nights ago, in the pedestrian region of Ximen, was suspected of hacking down a fellow pedestrian, Chiu to death, the passersby who witnessed this started hollering and screaming, but, nobody DARED helped the man who was being hacked down, in the end, Chiu suffered injuries and subdued Lai, and, the police took over from there.

Lai claimed that he’d heard someone told him, that Chiu was “a spy sent from China”, that, was why he’d attacked him with a knife, claimed that there were, voices inside his ears, commanding him, he was once admitted for treatment, but the police checked, and he had NO mental illness handbook, and the victim was NOT from China, after they’d questioned him, they booked him on attempted murder.

The police pointed out, that Lai (age 22), two nights ago, at around 11:36, rode his motorcycle, to the cross section of Hanchung and Wuchang Streets, took out a watermelon knife he’d prepared, hacked Chiu (age 55) on the back, after the victim turned around, blocked a second stab with his right arm, he ran to the opposite side of the streets.

Lai pursued after him, on the way, he’d hounded on Chiu, they started wrestling on the ground, back then, the walking district was filled with people, all the witnesses screamed, although someone managed to call the police, but, NOBODY helped out, Chiu was injured, and still fought, later on, he managed to subdue Lai to the ground, to prevent him from further attacking him.

The officers from Wanhua Substation came to the calls to arrest Lai, rushed Chiu to the emergency room, after the doctors sutured up his wound, Chiu was not in life-threatening danger, and Lai refused to answer ANY questions that the police asked throughout the night.

Yesterday morning, Lai finally complied with the police’s inquiries, gave his statement, and the police found out, that just last week, he was also, involved in a robbery in Wanhua District too.

And so, it’s clear, that the perpetrator here, is suffering with some sort of a mental condition, because hacking someone you don’t know, out of the blue is just NOT normal, and, this man got caught by the cops!  And, all the bystanders, still didn’t DO anything to help this man who was being hacked down, that just shows, how the bystander effect, as well as the diffusion of responsibility still takes over people’s minds in reality here!
