Since my father started treatment for cancer, because he’s elderly, we’d decided, to not tell him that he had cancer. And the doctors, they’d played along too, said to my father, “There are ulcers in your colon, we just need to perform surgeries on you, to remove all of them that’s all!” my eldest sister added, “Other people’s ulcers are on the surface of their skins, yours are inside your body, it’s no big deal”.
My father had a neighbor, and his children were told by the doctors, that he had cancer, and they decided to conceal the fact from him, just told him, “You need to get your intestines treated, to when it’s completely okay”, and, the families and relatives who knew, also concealed the facts from him, everybody worked hard, encouraged this elderly man to go through the treatment procedures, but, at the age of eighty-five, he’d still, passed away.
The first time I’d gone with my father to electrotherapy, the nurse asked me, if my father knew his own condition? When I’d told her no, she’d immediately placed a red sticker on his charts, said that when the doctor sees it, he won’t disclose the condition to him.
I’d left home to study and to work at the age of sixteen, I was, estranged from my father, and, didn’t know how to strike up a conversation with him. As my father stayed in the hospital, his nights were, overcome with dreams, causing him to become restless; later on, I’d asked him, what he’d dreamed about? Hoped, to divert his attention from the discomforts of his treatment. This particular day, my father was really in bad physical condition, he’d had food intakes, and, immediately, he’d had diarrhea afterwards, and so, the nurses put him on the drips; but he’d insisted on getting up to take a stroll, as he’d talked about the dream he had the night before, there was a huge winter melon that grew out of someone’s fields, larger than the average size, he’d contemplated, “Who, can I sell such a huge melon to?”, and dreamed that the elderly neighbor who’d died of colon cancer, getting into a fist fight with someone, in the end, his neighbor’s house fell down.
After he’d told me about his dreams, he’d told me, “The technologies are so advanced currently, I’m not at all scared, even IF I have cancer! There are, a lot of others who were, diagnosed with cancers, and lived on, for multiple years afterwards………”, I was, stunned, my father turned his head around, smiled at me, as if, he’d understood something, it’s just, that he didn’t, stated it out so bluntly either.
So, that just shows, how even IF you tried to keep the fact of what was happening away from your loved ones, they would still sense that something wasn’t right, and, it won’t be long, before the person figures out what’s going on, and, the family lied to the elderly, for his own sakes, the family members’ hearts are in the right place, but, it’s always, better, to tell the truth, at least, that would give the elderly the time, to finalize her/his own affairs!
