The Small Hopes that Were Relayed

and no, not my photograph…

Translated…

For several weeks now, I’d not bumped into Mr. S, is he ill?  Or………

Actually, Mr. S and I, we don’t really know one another, we’d not known one another’s name either, it’s just that we’d made an appointment to meet on a Saturday afternoon at the supermarkets, that, is why I’d called him, “Mr. S”.

The first time I saw Mr. S, he was flipping through the trash can by the supermarket, with a shopping bag on the floor next to him, with a few empty plastic bottles—I understood then and there, I’d immediately handed him the empty bottle, and the one dollar Euro that I was going to use, to get a shopping cart to him.  I was afraid that I may damage his ego, and I wasn’t, at all, fluent in German, so I just, smiled like a dummy toward him.

There was that look of surprise that flashed in his eyes then, he’d shyly accepted the bottle, but didn’t take that euro from me.  Then, I’d told him in English, that every Saturday afternoon, he can wait for me right there, I guess he understood, said thank you, and nodded.

Being practical, I’d originally just drunk the water I’d broiled, but after this, whenever I’d gone shopping at the supermarkets, I’d subconsciously pick up two bottles of water or juice, thought, that he could get 0.25 euros per bottle, and now, he’ll have a dollar.

Later on, I’d come to discover, that the track I exercised on, there would be abandoned and used up plastic bottles that the students were finished drinking from scattering all over the places, and so, I’d started taking along a knapsack to exercise, searched for the bottles all over, and, every time I’d squatted down, I’d feel glad once.

At first, my husband couldn’t understand it, “We don’t need this spare change, do we?”, I said, “Surely we don’t, I’m not just getting 025 euros each and every time I’d squatted down, what I’d picked up was a little hope, each and every single time, for Mr. S”, ever since, whenever my husband goes out for his walks, he’d come home with empty bottles from time to time too.

With all of the extra sources, I didn’t just hand just two, three empty bottles to Mr. S anymore.

I hope, that Mr. S had moved, or that he may have found a job.  And, in the short times we’d exchanged our gazes, he’d taught me, to cherish what I have, to appreciate how much I own.

And so, this, is a lesson, from a homeless man that this woman learns, and, that still just shows, that there are lessons, for you to learn, as long as you keep on, seeking them out, and says W-H-O a homeless learn has NOTHING to offer to the world?  The homeless man from the above taught this woman a valuable lesson on life!
