We took the advantage of this long weekend, a group of us, old neighbors, gone on a trip, with the adults, as well as, the children too.
After supper, when we were, getting involved in conversations, the eighty-something Grandpa Chen asked Lin’s son, Shane, “I’d heard, that you’d graduated, top of your class in high school, and now, you’re outstanding in university too, tell us, how you do it, how were you able to, make such high grades in school?”
Shane, who’s very clean looking said shyly, actually, he’d hated, studying back when he was younger, when he was in the first grade, his parents were divorced, and his father had custody over him, but, his dad would get off late from work each and every single night, and, there were, no other adults in his home at the time, and so, when he couldn’t answer a question on his homework assignments, he’d left it blank, and so, he’d made, bad grades. As he got into the second grade, the homeroom teacher who was new in the school noticed how he didn’t finish his assignments at all, asked him about what’s going on in his home; he’d cried, as he’d answered his homeroom teacher’s every single question, after his teacher heard, she’d tapped him gently on the shoulders, said to him, “It’s okay if you’d scored the lowest in class, it’s not your fault, just work hard, and I know, you will make better grades.”
From that day on, his homeroom teacher not only gave him extra help after school, she’d also used the assignment books to communicate with Shuan’s dad, wanted him to show more cares and concerns toward him. When Shuan’s dad learned of his son’s issues, he’d held him tightly and said, after a long while, “It’s okay that you’re last place right now, from now on, you will only get better, and not worse!”
With the encouragements from his homeroom teacher, plus his dad, sitting up with him to go through his homework with him every evening, he’d slowly, gotten to love learning, and kept making progress. He’d encouraged himself, to work hard, partly, for his responsibilities as a student, partly, to not let his home room teacher and his dad’s expectations go to waste. Shuan said, he’d carried these thoughts, to learning, that, was how he was able to make, good grades.
Hearing Shuan, I truly believed, that so long as you give the children a little more encouragements, no matter the grades, it can help them, tap into their potentials for learning, that, is what’s important.
So, this guy just didn’t get enough encouragements, and, once his school teacher and his father started paying more attention to his performances in school, he’d started, making progresses, and fell in love, with learning, that just shows, how important it is that the parents need to work alongside the school teachers, to help their kids learn, to perform well in school.
