and no, not my photograph…
This, is how a centurion managed to stay active in the body, and in the mind, translated…
My mother-in-law who’d turned a hundred just this year, is a centurion with great wisdom, outgoing, and optimistic elder. When she was younger, my father-in-law worked far away from home, she’d raised her seven children up all on her own. She’d often said, no matter how hard the times got, she’d needed to put her kids through college, plus, she wasn’t like the traditional Asians, only believed that boys should go to school, she’d encouraged her daughters to study more, because, “the best dowry is your diploma from school.”
At age seventy, all of my mother-in-law’s children had all started their separate families and became established in their separate careers. She’d gotten involved with volunteering then, and started laboring, although the place where she volunteered was some ways away from her home, she’d needed to take two transfer busses, to get to the temple on that mountain, she’d still not feel stressed, worked hard, to service those who came to worship all she could.
Sometimes, when there are, events at the temple, we’d needed to make a date to take my mother-in-law out for lunch. My mother-in-law’s volunteer career, had spanned across two decades in a blink of an eye, until she’d turned ninety-five, she’d stopped volunteering, because of her health.
After my mother-in-law stopped working as a volunteer, she’d not stayed at home. She’d gone to the local parks to exercise for one, to two hours every single day, kept up with her normal physical activities, when she has some spare time on her hands, she’d still changed into her robes, and would recite the Buddhist verses, or play the games of Sudoku. She said, exercising her brains every single day, that, would help her remember all of her young, and her days would be fuller too.
Cleanly, eating light, following a strict schedule of sleep, and worshipped Buddha with her true heart, is my mother-in-law’s way of aging well. Although her physical health is slowly deteriorating, we’d often told her, that being healthy is a blessing, that you will definitely, live until you’re 120!
And so, this, is how one elderly keeps herself activated in old age, she’d kept getting involved in socializing, volunteered, ate a healthy diet, challenged her own mind by doing Sudoku, and, because she’s working hard, to keep up with her health, that, is how she’s able to, age so well.
how elderly who aged well look…
