Since Mayor Ke was elected, he’d worked hard, to push forth the greener environment in the city, yesterday, he’d gone to the privately owned nursing home in Wenshan District to see the rooftop garden. When asked about the effect of the greener city environment, Ke said, if you do it, then, there’s an effect, that he will start from the smaller departments of his office, then, spread it into the city districts.
The seventy-six year-old Wu said, she’d lived in Taipei for over thirty years, and as she’d gone out in the past, she’d seen nothing but tarp roads, and tall buildings, never imagined that she could plant something green, that after she’d been placed in the homes, she’d started getting into vegetable planting, and that her moods were like when she was a kid, worry free and happy now, plus, planting the vegetable allows her to get the exercises she needed, and she could harvest fresh produce too, she felt very accomplished.
But, planting on the roofs, the residents feared most about leaks, the higher levels of humidity, and other issues. The production’s department manager, Liao said, that this year, the example gardens had the higher pots of vegetables, to prevent the accumulation of water, if they didn’t elevate the plants, they’d put the hollow bricks underneath, so the potted vegetables won’t be in direct contact with the roof, and the water that accumulated has a chance of evaporating, and, leveling the plants can also prevent the instances where the elderly would need to bend over to tend to their planted produce.
So, this, is a great thought, it not only makes the elderly regain that sense of giving back to the world, making them useful, it also beautifies the environment, and, at the same time, making some income for the nursing homes, so, that’s, multiple birds, with just ONE stone there!
