The Wall of Graffiti

and no, still NOT my photo…

Allowing the child to EXPRESS her artistic talents freely, translated…

Every time I’d gone to Chi-Tsuen’s house, I’d found, that there would be, new figures on his walls, last time, it was, a house, and this time, a cartoon character; it was because, his daughter, since she’d started kindergarten, loved doodling with her crayons everywhere, and, his walls became, the biggest canvas for her.

I’d once asked, Chi-Tsuen, doesn’t he and his wife put a stop to their daughter’s doodling on the walls?  His replies were very easy, since his daughter loved art, and, there was, a HUGE white wall in his house, why not just let her, draw on it.  At the same time, he’d made a deal with his child, that she can only draw on the walls in the house, that as she’d gone to school, or other places, she couldn’t, draw on the walls anymore; and, his daughter was, very well-behaved to, followed her dear old dad’s orders.

I’m truly in awe at Chi-Tsuen, willing to allow his daughter to express her artistic talents on the walls, he’d not minded that his daughter drew all over the walls.  What’s more interesting was, as his daughter entered the fourth grade, she’d felt, that her past “artwork” was such an eyesore; and, Chi-Tsuen also done what his daughter wanted, painted over the walls with a fresh coat of paint.  When the walls became all white again, it’d become, an invitation, for his daughter, to allow her, to express herself artistically.

In the encouragement of Chi-Tsuen, his daughter got more and more into art, he’d sent her to art classes outside of the schools.  Slowly, the paintings on the walls that his daughter did became more and more mature, whether it be a sparrow, or the sketches of a red apple, it’d shown a clear improvement of his daughter, as an artist.  And, when she’d won an award, in a competition of sketching for her school, the ecstatic expression of the father, was way more than the daughter’s.

After Chi-Tsuen’s daughter went into middle school, she’d once begged her dad to paint over the walls, she felt, that there’s still, room for improvement in her art.  But, Chi-Tsuen told his daughter, to not wipe it all away so quickly, as the art are a process of growth of his daughter’s.  At the end, the artwork didn’t disappear off the walls, instead, whenever guests came to their house, they’d see more and more new drawings on there.  The open way of education that Chi-Tsuen took, to educating his daughter had helped set that seed of art inside of her; and, the colorful walls of their house became, the petri dish that cultivated these dreams.

And so, this, is one way, to NOT freak out when your kid start drawing on the wall, and, the method that the dad took, was worth learning from, he’d not worried about the colors his daughter put on the walls, instead, he’d encouraged her to do more art on their walls, and, at the end, the daughter grew mature, and felt, that her past drawings aren’t as good, and wanted to wipe them all out, but the dad didn’t want her to, and, what better way is there, to cultivate the love of artistry, than to encourage your kid, to draw more?

not my photo still…
