Taiwan is, marching towards the elderly population taking up the majority, one out of every four seniors sixty-five and older is diagnosed with dementia, the Taiwan Cell Phone Company yesterday hosted the “Remembering You on the Way” forum yesterday, with the former newscast, Shu-Wei Lin and the doctor in charge of the psychiatric department from Cardinal Tien’s Hospital, Dr. Wen-Jie Chang to speak, so the public can gain a better understanding at how to take care of the demented elderly.

Lin shared her own personal experiences, at age sixty-one, her mother was diagnosed with temporal lobe dementia, she’d wandered off, and her families had to look for her for a day and a half, and they’d gotten a call, that she’d been found, in Keelung.

She’d recalled the situation back then, “After my mother was gone for almost twenty hours, we’d reported it to the police, asked around the neighborhood, and all our close friends and families came and helped us look for her, and we’d asked to review the surveillance footage from the nearby police precincts, as well as the stores, and we’d rode around in the taxi, to all the possible places she might have gone, and in the end, we’d still, not found her.”  In order to prevent a second time of wandering off and getting lost, Lin hired a twenty-four hour aide for her mother.

Dr. Jie-Wen Chang reminded the families, to keep an eye on the daily livings of the elderly at their home, to realize that earliest warning signs of dementia.  He’d pointed out, that in the earlier stages, the signs can easily be missed out on, which would delay the treatment processes, he’d reminded the people, that if their elders had gotten lost, in the familiar areas around their homes, then, the families need to pay close attention, and take the elders to the doctors, and to set up means, to prevent the elders from wandering off and getting lost again.

The C.E.O. of the Bjorgaas Welfare Foundation, Chou said, that the demented population is a high-risk group for going missing, and once the elderly are on the streets, they may face dancers of injuries, or even, deaths.  The family members must take precautionary measures, to lower the risks of the demented elderly from wandering off, they can put contacting information on the items that the elderly wear regularly, as an identifying key.

And so, these demented elderly are wandering off, and, there’s little the society can do, after all, we can only prevent these things to a certain extent, and, the younger generations are doing all that they possibly can, to keep their parents safe here.

not my photo still…
