nope, not my picture…

I’d learned sign language due to an opportunity that presented itself to me, slowly, I’d met several friends who are hearing impaired, sometimes, when we can’t read what each other was signing, we’d used paper and pen to communicate as well. In one signed conversation, I’d learned that Mr. Chen’s wife bumped into some troubles, going to the dentist’s office, because Mrs. Chen is also a hearing impaired person, and she wasn’t educated, couldn’t communicate with her dentist on paper, and, the medical staff didn’t understand sign language, and, there were some issues with getting treated. Mr. Chen asked if I could come along to the hospital, the doctor said, that if there’s no hearing person (someone without hearing impairment) with his wife, then, he couldn’t treat her.
After I’d gone with Mrs. Chen, the doctor was relieved. Once, the doctor needed an X-ray of her, wanted to take her into the examination room, but because he didn’t tell Mrs. Chen beforehand, she’d become confused, and refused to go to an “unknown place”. After I’d explained to her using sign language, Mrs. Chen started smiling, followed the nurse into the X-ray room, to complete her check-up.
Another time was when I’d gone with Mr. Wang to the ophthalmologist’s office. He’d just had surgeries on his eyes a year ago, he’d gone to the doctor’s offices as he was supposed to after the surgeries, but his eye sight deteriorated quickly, he’d become confused as to why that is. I’d communicated with the doctor first, then, explained it to him what the doctor said, that, was when he’d realized, that his own body type, and his inherited trait were the cause of his sight, failing fast. The doctor said, that before he’d done the surgery on Mr. Wang, he’d explained it to him and his family, and the family could understand it, but they couldn’t clearly tell Mr. Wang things, that, was why Mr. Wang felt confused for so long, and now, everything’s cleared up.
In many cases, the middle aged to elderly group of hearing impaired persons didn’t have that much knowledge of language in the written form, and when they interacted with the regular populations, that, is when the barriers happen. Actually, members of the hearing impaired population are quite simple minded, learning sign language, becoming a bridge between the hearing and the auditory impaired, solving their crises in time, it’s an amazing thing to me.
So, you’d become a translator for the hearing impaired, because you wanted the hearing impaired to have equal chances, to live their lives as fully as the normal people, and that, was what’s driving you, in working as a translator.
