“I Don’t Want to Live Anymore”, Told the Friends Online, But Not the Closest of Kin

Not Wanting Words of Comfort, would Rather Rely on the Keyboards to “Stay Warm”, the Online Community Managed to Save Lives

With the prevalence of the online community, in recent years, there’s the bizarre trend of when people are contemplating suicide, they’d rather tell people they’d met online than their close friends and families!  Gladly, if the police are call in time, the police were able to track the GPS with the cell phones, or using the IP address locations.  But, three years ago, there was also a case, of multiple members of the online community, giving “kudos” when they saw the footage of someone committing suicide, but didn’t notify the police, and when the close family and friends of the young woman found her, it was, too late.

The United Hospital’s Songde Branch Psychiatric Department’s psychiatrist, Liu analyzed the reason why the individuals would rather tell the online community, perhaps, in their realities,, the families and close friends ARE the sources of their pains, or worried that telling those they know, will deter them from committing suicide; he’d reminded the public, that if there is someone around you who shows signs, you should start asking the individual questions, “What sort of help do you need?”, instead of blaming the person, “don’t do this”, use listening instead of scolding, even, accompany the person to see a psychiatrist, that will successfully resolve the crisis of wanting to suicide.

The police sad, that last month, a woman reported that a man she’d met online wanted to suicide, but she didn’t know his name, just his cell phone number; the police used the cell phone number, identified the man, then, used GPS on his cell, and managed to find, that this man, Kuo was located at Sec. 7, Zhongshan N. Road.  The police didn’t find Kuo in the hotel registry, but, a female guest’s record showed Kuo’s cell phone number.

The police knocked on the doors, as Kuo answered, he was shocked to find the police, asked them, “What’s going on?”, the police found that Kuo’s girlfriend was asleep, asked him outside to have a talk.

Kuo told them, that he used to be a cab driver, but, because in recent years he’d fallen ill, he’d quit his job, but the family owed a ton of debts, and they were forced to sell their ancestral home, that the enormous economic pressures made him want to end his own life; he said, that he’d relied on his girlfriend’s help, to make ends meet, that he didn’t want his girlfriend to worry, asked, “Mr. Police man, please don’t let her know”, and, he’d casted away the thought of suicide.

The Shihlin Police Subprecint’s Tien-Mu Substation, two years ago, also received a report of how a member of the online community left the message of “Going to heaven to find my girlfriends”, along with some other words, and posted out the photos of charcoal and a pot, the friends were so scared they’d called the policed, the patrolman reported the case to the internet police, and they used the IP address locator, managed to save the man, Lin, in Tainan.

In April, 2012, a 39-year-old man left “I’m gone now, hope you’ll be happy” on Facebook; last year, a man posted “This is, my last day online, spraying alcohol on the gas burners, preparing the wines, the meds, all ready to go…”, the police and fire department received the call, and, saved the men in both these cases.

But, Lin, a woman in Hsinbei City wasn’t so lucky three years ago; Lin was displeased at how her cohabiting boyfriend had stayed out all night on the eve of her birthday, posted the photos of her, burning charcoal online, and used live and play-by-play, broadcasted the process of her committing suicide, in the sixty-seven minutes of the entire process, there were twenty-eight members of the online community who’d found her, of them, twelve gave “Kudos”, but, nobody called the cops; when Lin was discovered by her boyfriend the very next day, she was, already DEAD.

The police pointed out, that based off of the missing person’s population’s work criteria, unless the individuals showed strong signs of being suicidal, the police can track the individuals down using IP addresses to prevent these tragedies, and, on other pressing matters such as abduction, persons gone missing, seriously ill, or matters involving children under seven, as well as other serious and major events, those who are in need of emergent help, the GPS tracking systems on the cell phones can be used, and, the police reminded the public, to show more care and concern toward the friends and families, in case that tragedies might happen again.

And so, that, is how it goes, because perhaps, these people feel, that their loved ones, friends, families, relatives can’t understand them, and would become judgmental of what they’re going through, that, is why they’d rather tell strangers they’d found online, and, this may lead to causing irreparable damages, because the bystander effect and the diffusion of responsibilities may get exacerbated by the online interactions that we’re all so used to.
