The Teacher Opened Up Her Home to Us

The amazing kindness of the teacher toward her students, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

The Yingming Middle School’s teacher, Han, in her thirty-two years’ worth of teaching career, she’d always volunteered to take care of students who are in need of care and concern, who are handicapped, who behaved badly.  Some of her students are in a low spot of learning, and, she’d taken them home with her, cooked suppers and ate with them, and after the meals, she’d teach the students their homework assignments.  And, there were students whose parents are rarely home, and, they’d hauled along their quilts, sleeping bags, and moved into her home with her.

On the eve of Teacher’s Day, the Huai-En Social Welfare Foundation, the Ling Chen Social Welfare Foundation, the Boy Scouts of Taiwan yesterday hosted the fourth annual Teacher Dedications Awards ceremony, the groups included: high school, middle school, elementary school, and special education, kindergarten and preschool, off the island, a total of fifty-one instructors who worked hard, to help the kids from bad backgrounds were all awarded.  The teachers are like those 24/7 shops, worked with the students, to help them find the light in their lives.

One of the awarded, Han worked in various middle schools, she’d counseled students with learning disabilities, students with Asperger’s, mildly retarded, students with dissociative identity disorder, kids with ADHD, and those with emotional difficulties.

“Kids can’t choose which families they were born into, and the kids from bad backgrounds needed even more care and concern, and love from the school teachers.”  Han said, the children from lower end of the economic statuses have little to no resources, and they couldn’t catch up to those students who can afford the extra help sessions, and she was willing to put in more time, to help these students understand the lessons.

She’d used electronic blackboards, and interactive gaming, to teach students English, or through discussion groups, so the students with better skills can help those who are not as adept in the foreign language out.  And if the students still couldn’t catch up, then, she’d taken them home, and teach them until they understood the material.  And, there were students, whose parents are rarely home, who had brought their quilts and camped at her place for a couple of months at a time, in preparing for their examinations too.

Han said that most students who misbehaved, with difficulties all had moving stories to tell.  There was a student who got into fights a lot, she’d asked him to write an e-mail each and every day, like a diary, and the student slowly opened up, claimed, that the reason he got into fights was because he was from a single-parent household, that the reason he got into fights was to get the adults’ attention.

Han said that toward those students, more care and concerns are needed, that an eight-hour work day is not quite enough.  But she’d not feel that it’s a burden at all.  she said, that there’s a student who is already in his forties, that every year on Valentines, Teacher’s Day, as well as her birthday, he’d sent her bouquets, and the parents would also make foods to thank her.

“The children from less fortunate backgrounds viewed the connections as especially important, and I’d just gave them a pull and a push when they were younger, but, they’d remembered the kindnesses of their teachers for life.”  Han said, that the students’ showing of their gratitude toward her is moving, and it’d compelled her to give everything to her students continually.

And so, you CAN see, how having a good teacher who cares about you can make ALL the difference in the world, can’t you?  Like this lady here, she is so dedicated in her job, she’d gone over AND beyond the call of her duty, and started taking care of her students OUTSIDE of the classrooms, and because the kids felt how much she’d cared for them, that, is why they’d reciprocated the kindness back to her, and we need more dedicated instructor like this in the world today!
