Using Games to Teach Math, a Student Was Able to Improve Her Grades from a Nineteen to a Hundred

Innovations in teaching children, the thoughts of a school instructor, from the Newspapers, translated…

Yi-Ping Liu who is from a single-parent household just entered into the first year of middle school in Taichung, back in the fifth grade, she started having trouble comprehending the subject of mathematics, and so, she could only put her head down to fall asleep in her math classes, she’d often flunked her math exams, at worst, she’d scored a nineteen.  At first, when the school offered her remedial instructions, she still couldn’t understand it, until when she went to the sixth grade, when Ms. Wu became her teacher, and she’d used games to teach her, and had her solve the problems in front of the class, to help her build up her confidence, that, was when Liu started to understand the math subject better, and became more confident about herself, her grades in math are clearly improving.  Other than passing her tests every single time now, she’d made a one-hundred too, yesterday, she was given an award for being a role model for all the students by the Department of Education.

A lot of students, because they couldn’t understand, they’d, fallen behind, and this had, affected their learning processes, the Department of Education had remedial courses set up, to help children from elementary school to middle school levels.  The budget of $140,000,000N.T. was put into the programs, there were 340,000 elementary and middle school children who benefitted from the program last year.  The Department of Education had selected ten students who showed clear improvements in their coursework in the middle and elementary school levels, along with eleven teams of teachers who worked with the kids to do the reteaching, other than receiving a trophy, the teaching teams received $50,000N.T. in prize money, and the students received $6,000N.T. each as scholarship money.

Liu who was raised by her maternal grandparents originally lacked the confidence in learning, later on, as her teacher kept encouraging her, she’d become the announcer of the school, entered into reciting competitions, and recitations in Taiwanese, to challenge herself.  Because Wu, her teacher, helping her to get caught up in math, using games and having her solve problems, it’d aroused her interest in the subject, she’d started facing the problems she encounters in her studies, and would start raising her hand up in class, she’d even brought this attitude to learning back to class, and, it’d affected her fellow classmates.  Liu said, after she’d gotten into middle school, she couldn’t understand math again, and so, she’d tape down the class sessions, and asked her older sister about it, and worked hard, to solve her own problems.

So, it’s with the lead of her teacher, it’d helped her overcome the fear of math, and, because of how kind her teacher is toward her, in being patient, teaching her how to solve the math problems, it’d helped this young woman do better in class, and, she’d started thinking of how to solve the problems on her own, she knows how to ask for help, and that, is the most important thing in learning: finding the help that one needs, to be successful!
