Last month, I hosted a one-day seminar at a school in Hsinchu, there was a teacher in the audience who’d asked me, “I think what you’re teaching us is amazing, but, how can I, do as the subtitle of your new book, ‘help light up the desires to learn in children’?”, this, would be the common knowledge that all parents, as well as school instructors want to have.
Last week, there were, teachers from Chengdu, as well as teachers and parents from Singapore who came to visit, they’d reviewed the over twenty class members’ learning processes. I was reminded of how when this group of kids came to me, they were only in the fifth grades, and, I’d given them Faulkner to read, the adult version, not the children’s versions, the kids were enthusiastic on the reading assignments, gave me a ton of positive feedbacks as well, they all took the novels home to read outside of class. And, this, was right around the time when the teachers from Chengdu came to watch me teach, I remembered that these sixth graders had, read Faulkner when they were in the fifth grade. So, I’d asked one of the girls, if she still remembered Faulkner, she’d nodded excitedly, and I saw a grin, slowly overcame her. I asked her what she thought about the book, she thought it was amazing. The teachers from Chengdu were all curious, are all the kids in the class all very studious? Are they all, advanced readers?
I’d pointed to three of the class members, told the instructors, that when they came to my class, they couldn’t even write a single word out. Another student from the class, had received the fourth place trophy for the essay competitions hosted by the city of Taichung, and that the first place winner was in my other class, that the levels of the students are varied in my class.
The teacher from Chengdu was surprised, she was there, to observe how I’d told the stories, how I’d led the kids into discussion sessions, from an issue that was related to life, into another level of understanding, but, she was very surprised at how my kids can relate so well.
So, in teaching, the attitude of the instructor is ALL too important, think about it, if you’re not even enthusiastic about the subject you’re teaching in, how can you ask your students to be worked up over the class discussions? And here, the teacher is like the parents, because just like the parents are the ones, making the families running well or bad, the teacher acts the same way for a classroom of children too.
