Written Until the Final Moments of Her Life, the Long-Time Writer, Lang Lo Passed Away

A life of WRITING, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

The long-time, senior writer, the broadcaster, Lang Lo that made her name in Taiwan AND China, early yesterday morning, because of heart failure, died, in the clinic in Taipei, she was ninety-six years old.

In her elderly years, Lang Lo was troubled by Alzheimer’s, she contracted pneumonia in June, was hospitalized, at the start of July, she was placed in the ICU.  The editor in chief of Literary Notices, De-Ping Feng stated, that he’d visited her last month, Lang Lo who loved music was singing the high notes in the hospital room, she was filled with an optimism about her condition, and she had a strong will too.

Lang Lo’s original name was Pei-Feng Chai, born in Hebei in 1919, worked as a music teacher in the rural regions of her home district for many years.  In 1948, she’d come to Taiwan on her own, started working in the radio stations, and wrote, became a radio personnel in the China Broadcasting Company, and the Police Announcement Radio Station, hosted the programs on music and education.

In 1959, she produced the “Safety Place”, and continued producing the program for a total of thirty-two years, and, managed to soothe the minds of a lot of the traveling people’s hearts, and accompanied the youths in the coming-of-age processes as well.

The broadcasting job had, introduced Lang Lo to her writing career. In 1963, due to the calls from her audience, she’d published the manuscripts of her radio show, and complied it into the “Book of Lang Lo”, and, as the book was published, it’d sold out quickly.  Lang Lo then immediately published her other radio program, “The Talks of Life”, “To the Youths”, and, from an all-star radio personnel, she’d become a best-selling author.

After the straits were opened, Lang Lo had gone on invitation to China, to give speeches, managed to transfer the beliefs of “Book of Lang Lo”, the positive attitude toward life that she’d held, to the other end of the strait, there was a reader from the distant district who’d hand-copied over two hundred pieces of her writings to give them to his friends.  Lang Lo also wrote essays, in 1970, she’d published a romance novel, “The Snowed on Spring”, it’s similar to “Gone with the Wind” in tone, it’d hit the printing presses seventeen times.  In 1995, at the age of seventy-six, she’d finished “The Sinking Sand of the Years, Trilogy”, including “By the Ji Canal”, “The Clouds Passing By”, “The Ship that Returned to Harbor with the Wind and the Rain”, three long novels.

De-Ping Feng pointed out, that Lang Lo is a “very dutiful writer”, she’s very talented, but, talents were not all she relied on.  Although Lang Lo wrote about her family histories, her experiences in life, she’d still gone to the libraries, to look up references, the older newspapers; before she fell ill, she’d still kept writing endlessly, “wrote until she took her very last breath.”

So, this, is the life AND times of a well-known writer, and, because her writings are hitting people close to their hearts, she was able to use her writings, to touch the lives of many readers, that, would be why she would be dearly missed, and she’d left behind a legacy of memories, of wisdom, for those who had, and will be, reading her books too.
