In the distant regions, dentists are lacking, the children in Yunlin has a high rate of cavities, and, none dared open their mouths to laugh out loud, the elderly’s false teeth broke into four pieces, he’d used a stapler to patch it up; gladly, there is a dentist of compassion who’d made his trips regularly up the mountainsides to treat them, to make up for the lacking of resources in the distant regions of the island.

“Liugui Medical Station” has bright lighting, brand new medical equipment, there were, people, lined up to see the dentist, and, the makeup of the population were all gray-haired elderly persons, everybody waited patiently, as the nurses called out their numbers.  The biggest difference compared to other clinics is that there would be a different dentist who was on duty, they’d all driven from the city of Kaohsiung, up the mountains, over two hundred kilometers in distance, to see the patients.

Another distant area, Jia-Hsien, there is also, a similar medical station.  Both these stations were set up, ten decades ago, by the secretary of the Kaohsiung Dentist Union, Ming-Hsien Fang.

Fang stated, that in regions such as Chien-Jing, Hsin-Shin, etc., etc., etc., there would be a dentist per five hundred citizens; there are 16,000 people living in Liugui, but, there wasn’t even ONE dentist; and, other areas such as Jia-Hsien, Tien-Liao, Taoyuan, etc., etc., etc., are districts without dentists.

In the call of the union, a group of dentists went to Jia-Hsien and Liugui to set up treatment stations, Monday through Friday, the doctors take shifts, taking turns to head up the mountains to see the patients, this had continued for about a decade already.  Ming-Hsien Fang said, that the two medical stations weren’t funded by the government at all, and, the equipment they’re using are all funded by the workers themselves.

Before Typhoon Morakot came, it was a Friday, when Chou was on duty, because he’d made another appointment with another patient, he’d still gone to Liugui, after he was done seeing the patients, he drove in the wind and the rain, off the mountains.  Afterward the typhoon went off, the roads were destroyed, and, there was no way to get in, he’d brought the water supplies from off the mountatins to Liugui, “there were already, three patients waiting there for me.”

The distant part of Yunlin, also had a lack of dentists, it’s estimated that one out of two children in school had cavities, and, the kids who had cavities don’t even dare open up their mouths to laugh out loud.  A Dr. Wang from Penghu learned that there’s a lacking in dentists in Yunlin, starting two years ago, he’d gone to the distant region of Gukeng to see patients free of charge, to treat the children from Huanan Elementary School, located up in the mountains, he’d even bought equipment for treatment costing over $200,000N.T. and left it at the schools.

So, these two doctors saw the needs of the people, and offered their service to the locals, and, by so doing, they’d brightened up the residents’ days, given them the treatments they’d needed, and, provided the needed medical care to those who are ill, and, they’re doing that solely from their compassions, and they don’t even get paid, imagine that!
