Things to do as a family, translated…
The summers, the best time for the whole family to “recharge”; especially during the evenings, it’s the time for our “family reading sessions”, the time we come together, to share what we read.
In the summer, my kids who stayed in school regularly had all come home, and the whole family is now, together, every evening after supper, we’d turned off the television, and started our family of five’s reading time together. In the small yard, we’d had a small round table, shared a cup of coffee or tea with one another, and start our reading session.
We’d taken turns, being the speaker, I take Mondays, my wife, Tuesdays, my eldest daughter, Wednesdays, etc., etc., etc. ………we’d listed out the books, including the titles, the author, the publisher, the summaries, and, hand in our reading reports of a thousand characters each. Although my three kids are all in grad schools, working on their masters or doctorates, but, the books we’d read are all non-study related, anywhere from the humanities, the arts, the religious, the sciences, included everything, so everybody in the house can learn a variety of subjects, and in depth too, this is also, the primary purpose of our reading club.
After we’d reported to one another on what we’d read, if there are questions, we’d put it out on the tables for discussions. And, we would get in heated debate on the different characters, different storylines, because we all have differences of opinions, it’s a wonder, that we’d get too rowdy at times. Sometimes, we’d “debated” until the wee hours of the nights, and still are unwilling to let the discussion topics head to rest, because the “reason becomes clearer, as we’d debated on it more”; but, for the sakes of having enough resting time, we could only call a truce, and, set aside the discussion for tomorrow.
The very next evening, although we’d still argued on a certain book, but, after a night’s worth of cooling down, we were able to bring wisdom to the tables, in our differences of opinions, this, was an unwarranted gift to us all.
In reading the books, exchanging our thoughts, we’d gotten more knowledge from each other, and enriched our lives too; at the same time, through the discussions, we’d increased our bond with one another too, allowing us to grow, to mature as a family, to become more enriched in our minds, adding volume to all of our lives!
And so, reading became this family’s thing to do, because reading is a good way to enrich your knowledge base, and, through sharing your thoughts, opinions on what you’d read up on with someone else, you get another brand new perspective, perhaps, an angle you’d never even considered before, and, this family is reading together, and, through reading, they’re able to stay connected with one another.
