Dementia Took a Toll

Dementia took a toll, NOT just on you, the family member who’d been diagnosed, but all of us, your friends, your families, your children too.

Dementia took a toll, and, just like that never-ending, winding pass, it just keeps on, extending in front of us all, and, none of us could see the end in sight.

Taking care of you, our demented parent, it’s something we, the children SHOULD do, after all, you RAISED us up, and yet, even with all of us, shouldering this heavy burden of a responsibility together, each and every one of us still felt uneven, because one of us would ALWAYS get the shortest straw, and had to shoulder what seemed to be, MORE than our equal shares.

Dementia took a toll, and, as you regressed more and more, back into infancy, I’m there, by your side, watching all of this take place, and I’d hate myself, for losing my patience with you, you’d NEVER wanted this, this, was NOT your fault, it’s just the process of aging, and, there’s nothing I can do, to change the situation, I guess, that, was what I’m truly angry about, I’m not angry at you, okay?  I’m just, angry at this situation that’s before us is all………

Dementia took a toll, up to the moment you died, we’d watched, as you become less and less capable, our parent, who raised us up, who pulled through the hard times.
