This is still due to the modern day advances in technologies, from the Newspapers, translated…
Closing the distances, the instructors focused on “Customer Relations Management”, but, on the Issues of Absence, Questions, Everything Got Transmitted Online, the Teachers Felt a Total Lack of Respect
With the abundance use of Facebook, a lot of the professors from universities believed that Facebook became the most important medium of communication for the instructors and the Z generation, and the higher education industries became more and more like the service industries now, the teachers must now, focus on “client relations management”, they’d even have to log onto Facebook, and be there 24/7, to answer to the students’ inquiries.
“When the students wanted me to write a recommendation letter or tell me that they needed a letter of recommendation, or that they couldn’t come to class, they’d all sent me a private message on FB.”, the professor from the Broadcast Management Majors from the World Journalism University Hsu said, that when her students see her “green light” on FB, they’d known that she’s still logged on, and other than the time when she’s sleeping, on all other occasions, she’d be at her students’ beck and call. In order to get with the students, the professors must work alongside the social networks.
Hsu said, that FB allows her to swiftly and directly communicate with her students, “from before when I’d sent my students e-mails, it’d taken them forever to reply, and now, when my students are logged on, I can make sure that they’d read the messages, and, when they didn’t reply back, I’d known, that they’re having troubles”, and still, as students believed that they could use Facebook or LINE to connect to the professors directly at any time, “All of my spare times are bounded by my students.”
She’d spoken truthfully, this way of interacting is lacking respect, from before she’d made her students call her after they’d sent her the e-mails of inquiries, for the sake of courtesy, “It all depends on how each instructor adapt to this”, and, the students used the “Martian languages”, like “der”, “cry a bit”, or they’d used emoticons or pictures to replace the words, and even called her “sis”, “Do we need limits to this sort of disregarding who’s the teacher and who are the students? This, is the direction we should consider in the future.”
Hsu said, the authoritarian, the one-command-one-action method no longer works on the college students currently now, that you must speak the same languages that they speak, in order to get them to agree with you on an emotional level, believing, that “the professors are on my side”, and, the results showed up on the students’ performances, especially with those students who are not doing well, she would use the world wide web to “make a date” with the students, to discuss their reports, to encourage the students to find motivations to study hard, and the results were amazing.
The professor, Liang from the Anime majors of the Transportation University said, that he’d often gotten “harassed” by the students online, especially before and after the examinations, even, there were students who told him they were going to be absent online, he’d turned them down, “otherwise, as they’d entered into the workforce, it’d be really bad, if they do that to their bosses.”
He’d spoken truthfully, that the world wide web DID speed up the communicating process between him and his students, for instance, the stories of the amusement park explosion, the random hacking on the MRT, after he’d seen the news reports, he’d used LINE to remind his students to pay more attention.
The lecturer of the Applied Foreign Languages Department from Shijen University, Chen said, a lot of students are asking him English questions, or asking him to do something for them on Facebook, plus, the wordings used on FB are very casual, and he felt this lack of respect, “I’d normally not replied to these messages”, after all, we’re not friends, but student-professor relationship, plus, the teachers are not the answer-question machines to the students, so, he’d rarely added his students as his friends on Facebook.
And so, there ARE the pros AND cons to this, because everything is easier to transmit from online, we’d shoot each other a message, and, within the day, we’d get the replies, normally, and so, the students are utilizing this convenience to interact with their professors, but, the professors believed it to be improper, after all, the relationship is still student-teacher, and, there’s this LACK of respect for your school instructors when you chat on FB, versus when you write a formal letter to them.
