The seventeen-year-old young mother, Peng had a fight with her husband, her husband left home, she’d gotten out to party, to get rid of her negative feelings, left her two-year-old son and one-year-old daughter to the husband’s uncle, He to look after. The young siblings were neglected for nine days on end, nobody to clean up after them, they were only fed bread twice in the entire nine days, two nights ago, one was found dead, the other, in critical condition.

The D.A. examined yesterday, that the little boy was one size smaller than children his age group, there were bruises on his right eye, and legs, and whether or not he was beaten to death, or that he’d died of starvation, they will need an autopsy to clarify; the infant girl who was found nearly dead also had bruises on her hands and feet, and started showing signs of kidney failure due to dehydration too. The D.A. believed, that Peng and He was suspected of neglecting the children to death, they’d asked the judge to keep them in custody, and the two suspects were processed by juvenile courts.

The police investigated and found, that Peng, at the start of this month had an argument with her husband, after Peng’s husband left home, on the sixth, she’d gone to Taipei too, and asked the husband’s uncle, He (age 34) to look after her kids.

On the thirteenth, Peng had returned to Hsinchu, went to the movies with her friends, and two days ago, she’d gone shopping, then, returned back to her mother’s household in Chudong.

Two nights ago at around ten, He looked in on the young siblings, found that the boy had been dead a long time, called to let Peng know, “I think the kids are dead”, Peng then rushed home to Chudong, she saw her son dead, and her daughter, weakened, dehydrated, called up a friend for help, but didn’t report it to the police. Peng stayed in the bedroom, fed bread to her daughter, while He carried the little boy from the bedroom to the living room, covered him up with a blanket, and yesterday at around midnight, they’d finally called the police.

The paramedics and fire department arrived on scene, found the little boy famished and already dead, they’d notified the police immediately. He then told the firefighters, “there’s another one in the bedroom, she seemed to have a headache.” The paramedics entered the room, saw the young infant girl in Peng’s arms, face already turned yellow, can’t focus her eyes, clearly, malnourished.

Peng said, “My child was starving, I’d fed her some bread already”, refused the firefighter’s request to allow the child be taken to the hospital on the ambulance, then, the infant was taken to the hospital by Peng’s friend.

“I helped them out, how can you blame me if the child is dead?”, at the interrogations, He told the police, admitted that he’d looked in on the children for five minutes a day, but, there were one or two days that he didn’t go to check on them, that, was why he didn’t feed them on time, he’d gone down on his knees, begged Peng for forgiveness.

When the D.A. asked He for the details, he’d turned his statements around, said that Peng had abandoned her young, and out of the goodness of his heart, he’d taken on looking after them, that he wasn’t asked to babysit. He didn’t have a stable job, couldn’t feed himself well, he’d only gone to check up on the children on the eleventh, and the fourteenth, and fed the young children some croissants, and on the fourteenth was when he’d discovered the little boy dead.

The neighbors said, that Peng started in her first year of middle school, fell in love with her husband, after they married, they’d lived together, they have a son and a daughter, the house belonged to Peng’s mother-in-law. Regularly, Peng would part-time at the nearby restaurant. In these past couple of nights, they’d heard children’s cries from the house, but because the neighbors knew, that it was a complicated household, they didn’t prod any further, nor did they call the police, they were all shocked to hear about the death of the little boy.

And so, this, is the result of leaving your young to someone you’d trusted, and because the parents, as well as the relatives are too young, how can they BE responsible enough to take care of children, and so, two young kids are sacrificed, and this will keep happening in the world too.
