The Anxious Parents, the Myth of Getting Good Grades

Observations, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

Awhile ago, I bore witness to how a pair of pharmacist parents worked together, to “grill” their son, and, I was surprised at how “narrow” the ways of education is in our country.  That child was only in the third grade, he originally came home, with glee, with the four testing papers, of a grade of 388, not only didn’t he get the commends of a job well done, instead, the parents reviewed over each and every subject, “How could you have gotten this question wrong?” “Had you gotten this one right, you would’ve had a perfect score!” “You’re just too careless, didn’t read the question completely!”, the parents started blaming the child, and, the smile disappeared slowly, from the kid’s face.

Can you blame the parents, for keeping a close eye on the grades?  Their anxieties originated from the reality that these test scores stand for, the education forum that we’re currently living under is seriously deranged, the major exams, the quizzes, using the grades, to determine success.

And so, this, is how the focus on grades, instead of the focus on WHAT is being learned will get you, I mean, the kid did well enough, out of a total grade of 400, and yet, the parents not only didn’t give this boy a thumbs up for his good work, instead, they’d GRILLED him on what he’d done wrong, are you FUCKING kidding me?  How, do you think this kid will grow up?  Focusing solely, on what wasn’t done right, instead of what he and others did well.
